A Brief History of Avalon Mall
Originally opened in 1967, Avalon Mall quickly established itself and emerged as the premier shopping destination in St. John’s. At only one-storey tall with 35 stores, Avalon Mall has grown exponentially since to best serve our loyal shoppers and keep up with changing consumer wants.
Many visitors fondly remember one of our original tenants Woolco for being a bustling and lively department store for generations of shoppers. While Woolco eventually closed its doors and was replaced by Walmart and eventually Sears, it was an integral part of the original Avalon Mall community and provides lasting memories and nostalgia for its customers.
Throughout the years, Avalon Mall has undergone several significant upgrades aimed at delivering the highest quality shopping experience for customers. While recent renovations have been some of the biggest to date, Avalon Mall has had many upgrades including adding our second storey in 1977 and expanding the upper level in 1987.
In 2017, Avalon Mall proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary! To commemorate this milestone, an event was held to celebrate with a tribute remake by local musicians and comedians of the classic “Babylon Mall” song from 1981.
Revitalization and Redevelopment at Avalon Mall
In 2021, Avalon Mall finished one of its most ambitious renovations yet after embarking on a $100 million redevelopment project with Crombie REIT which modernized the mall and enhanced the shopping experience for all visitors. This project used inclusive design to make the mall more accessible for guests, created spacious gathering places, built a new parking garage bringing us to over 2900 parking spaces, and developed new retail space for our valued tenants.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
At Avalon Mall, we are committed to operating sustainably with a focus on being an environmentally responsible shopping center. Our team has won multiple awards for these efforts including earning the BOMA BEST Gold Certification in 2022 and being named the BOMA Canada’s TOBY – Enclosed Retail winner for our efforts to reduce waste, and conserve water and energy.
We ask that our visitors join us in these efforts by properly disposing of waste and recycling, utilizing our water refill stations during your visit, and bringing reusable bags.
Together we can continue to be environmentally friendly leaders in the shopping centre industry.
